What have you enjoyed, or not, about your blogging experience this semester? Do you anticipate regularly updating your blog for non-class purposes after this semester? Why or why not?

What have you enjoyed, or not, about your blogging experience this semester? Do you anticipate regularly updating your blog for non-class purposes after this semester? Why or why not?

Honestly, when I first read the syllabus for this class and seen that we were required to do a blog post every other week I was terrified. I had never had a blog account before much less wrote a blog.  Before I wrote my first blog, I looked around on the internet for some examples to try to figure out exactly what I was supposed to do.  When I finally wrote my first blog I was so worried that I would fail. It turns out though; it is not nearly as hard as I was expecting to be. I really made a big deal out of nothing. I actually like it a lot. I enjoy sharing my opinion on topics with everyone and reading their feedback on things.  I also enjoy looking things through everyone else’s point of view. After this course ends I may not blog as much as I do now because I will not be required but I defiantly will not delete my account. I am really glad that I was required to create a blog account and post blogs for this class. I guess you really never know if you will like something until you give it a try!

Provide an argument as to why it is/or is not beneficial for a non-public relations major to complete an introductory level public relations course.

I think that it is VERY beneficial for non-public relations major to take an introductory level public relations course because, from my personal experience, there are a lot of things that are useful for not only public relations majors but Advertising, Marketing and Journalists.  In the intro to public relations class, that I am currently taking, we have discussed news releases and public radio announcements. Not only us this useful l for a public relations practitioner, but it’s useful for a journalist as well.  In class we also talk about target audiences, specific age groups, genders, and cultures. This is again useful for public relation practitioners but it is also useful for marketing and advertising agents too. Marketing and Advertising agents can use the information to better deliver their messages to their audiences. I actually believe that public relation practitioners should be required to take a test to become licensed. I think it would make the requirements for a job more diverse because some people do not even get a degree and still become a public relations practitioner. I just feel it would be more of a challenge if PR practitioners were required to become licensed.  So I firmly believe that non-public relation majors should take an intro level public relations course. I would even say that I believe it should be required.

Blog Post #5-Think about the last five movies/concerts you saw. How did you find out about them? (Poster? Word of mouth? Newspaper/Magazine advertisement? Facebook fan page? Emailed newsletter, etc.) Some individuals dismiss traditional public relations and advertising, but what’s your experience?

I think that when people see advertisements and public relation efforts it does not register with them. We are so accustom to those kinds of things that we do not think about the channel in which a message is delivered, we just think about the message itself. I think that the public is more involved in what is being discussed than what form it is being delivered in. I know that before I started taking this class I never really paid attention how a message was being conveyed or delivered.  Now that I know the various methods of advertising and public relations I not only listen to the message, I think about the various methods that are being used to deliver the message.

The last concert I saw was Luke Bryan’s Farm Tour Concert last month. I heard about it from my friends and I also am a member of his fan page on Facebook. There were posters all over town and Georgia Southern Campus too.  I also saw the new Fast Five Movie. I heard about this movie from my little brother. This movie had a lot of previews and advertisements on television too.  Most movies that I have seen lately I have heard about them from various friends and family members. Occasionally I will read the box office reviews for movies to decide what I would like to see. Over all my experience with advertising and public relations is by word of mouth rather than actual print or television advertisements.

I really enjoy traveling, especially to new tropical places. My family and I try to take a vacation somewhere new every summer. Public Relations and traveling have a lot to do with one another. Various areas of traveling use public relations like; travel agents, hotels, restaurants, businesses, outdoor activities and tourist attractions. Public Relations use a lot of different features to advertise and get the word out for various places. They use brochures and pamphlets, which you can usually find in your hotel room or convenient stores. People find Public Relations a lot more creditable than advertising companies. There are advertisements on radios, television, and the internet. They also give away free trips or discounts to attract attention to these vacation sites.  We discussed this Public Relations stunt in class, Public Relation specialists put the word out that they were looking for a someone to be an “island caretaker” to explore the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia. This attracted world-wide attention to Hamilton Island in Australia. The job was for 6 months and the salary was for $150,000 Australian dollars ($105,000 America dollars).

Post # 2–Discuss a current ethical lapse in the public relations industry.

Post # 2–Discuss a current ethical lapse in the public relations industry.

I chose to do the topic “Discuss a current ethical lapse in the public relations industry” because we spent a lot of time discussing this topic. This month is also Public Relation’s ethics month as well!

A lapse in the ethical part of Public Relations that I think is a problem for a lot of people is them being asked to compromise their beliefs as a person. Many people are not willing to compromise their beliefs for a job or someone else.  The book talks about traditional ethics doesn’t allow Public Relation professionals to be biased and try to manipulate people. However David L. Martinson states, “Public relations practitioners are justified in disseminating persuasive information so long as objective and reasonable persons would view those persuasive efforts as truthful.” The book also tells us that some consider it unethical for Public Relations representatives to have unwavering support for the organizations or client’s position. I believe to some extent this is true. I believe that a Public Relation representative should be devoted to the company or person that they are representing, however they should not be willing to ruin their reputation for it or compromise their own beliefs. They have to be able to live with the decisions that they make on a daily basis.

PRCA 2330 Blog Post 1 What are some myths and preconceptions of the field of public relations? Why do you think they exist?

Hey!! This blogging experience is a new thing for me. I hope that this works out. I chose the topic, what are some myths and preconceptions of the field of public relations? Why do you think they exist?

Myths that are commonly associated with the field of public relations is that it is not a real job. Many people have problems with this field because there is no concrete definition for it. This is because there are so many different areas in public relations that require different tasks. I think that these myths and preconceptions exist in part because it is not required to have licenses to work in the public relations field. (I think it should be required to be licensed.) Some people do not even go to college to pursue this field, that is another thing that makes the field so questionable. It is also thought that public relations is not a real job because people think of it as just possessing a good skill set.  In a way, I feel that this is true. However, I think that going to college will help sharpen these skills that you already have and make you a better in the field of public relations.
